Fun Facts, Cher!

 

Cher was born Cherilyn Sarkisian on May 20, 1946. Referred to as the Goddess of Pop, she has won an Academy Award, a Grammy Award, an Emmy Award, three Golden Globes and a Cannes Film Festival Award among others for her work in film, music and television. She is the only person in history to have received all of these awards.

Cher began her career as a backup singer and later came to prominence as one half of the pop rock duo Sonny & Cher with the success of their song “I Got You Babe” in 1965. She subsequently established herself as a solo recording artist, and became a television star in 1971 with The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour, a variety show for which she won a Golden Globe. A well received performance in the film Silkwood earned her a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress of 1983. In the following years, she starred in a string of hit films including Mask, The Witches of Eastwick, and Moonstruck, for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress of 1987.

André René Roussimoff was born May  19, 1946 was best known as André the Giant, a professional wrestler and actor. His best remembered acting role was that of Fezzik, the giant in the film The Princess Bride. His size was a result of acromegaly, and led to him being called “The Eighth Wonder of the World“.

In the World Wrestling Federation, he was a one-time WWF Champion and a one-time WWF World Tag Team Champion. In 1993, he was the first inductee into the WWF Hall of Fame.

Famous Birthdays, Perry Como!

“Fill my heart with song, and let me sing forever more,
You are all I long for,  all I worship and adore, in other words, please be true, in other words, I love you”. Can you guess the title of this famous Mr. C. song?

Pierino Ronald “Perry” Como was born May 18, 1912 and was a singer and television personality. During a career spanning more than half a century, he recorded exclusively for the RCA Victor label after signing with them in 1943. “Mr. C.”, as he was nicknamed, sold millions of records for Radio Corporation of America (RCA) and pioneered a weekly musical variety television show, which set the standards for the genre and proved to be one of the most successful in television history.

Also a popular recording artist, Mr. C. produced numerous hit records with record sales so high the label literally stopped counting.  His appeal spanned generations and he was widely respected for both his professional standards and the conduct in his personal life.

William “Bill” Paxton was born May 17, 1955. Gaining popularity after starring roles in the films Apollo 13, Twister, Aliens, True Lies, and Titanic. He was born and raised in Fort Worth, Texas, the son of Mary Lou and John Lane Paxton, a businessman, lumber wholesaler, museum executive, and occasional actor.

Janet Damita Jo Jackson was born May 16, 1966. Her collaborations with record producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis incorporated elements of rhythm and blues, funk, disco, rap, and industrial beats, which led to crossover appeal in popular music. In addition to receiving recognition for the innovation in her records, choreography, music videos, and prominence on radio airplay and MTV, she was acknowledged as a role model for her socially conscious lyrics.

Born May 11, 1963, Natasha Jane Richardson was an English actress of stage and screen. Early in her career, she portrayed Mary Shelley and Patty Hearst in feature films, and she received critical acclaim and a Theatre World Award for her Broadway debut in the 1993 revival of Anna Christie. She won the Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical, the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actress in a Musical, and the Outer Critics Circle Award for her performance as Sally Bowles in the 1998 Broadway revival of Cabaret. Some of her notable films included Patty Hearst (1988), The Handmaid’s Tale (1990), Nell (1994), The Parent Trap (1998) and Maid in Manhattan (2002).

Her first marriage to filmmaker Robert Fox ended in divorce in 1992. In 1994, she married Irish actor Liam Neeson, whom she had met when the two appeared in Anna Christie. The couple had two sons, Micheál and Daniel. She died in 2009 following a head injury sustained when she fell during a skiing lesson in Quebec.
